Our Story

History and heritage of McIlwraith Croquet Club

Turning 100 is a remarkable milestone by any measure and we were delighted to welcome Her Excellency the Honourable Dr Jeannette Young AC PSM, Governor of Queensland, to help us celebrate on Saturday 23 September, 2023.

When prospective members attended the first meeting to form the Club on Monday 24 September 1923, little could they have known that a century later we'd still be going strong; our membership would sit just under 100; mallets would be made not only from wood but also modern carbon fibre; we’d be playing not just one but four different types of croquet; player cards would be replaced by online booking sheets; attire would go from formal whites to comfortable, colourful and casual; players would go from well-to-do women to all community members being welcome.
